Technology
And The Sea - Fascination Marine Technology
Marine technology
is not about ships and shipbuilding, but about the technology that is
used to explore the oceans, protect them and use them sustainably. Please
consider the harsh conditions the marine technology is exposed to in the
sea. The sea is often a very inaccessible habitat with strong currents
and aggressive salt water. The deeper you get, the higher the water
pressure becomes, people and equipment have to be able to withstand
this. Wind and waves make the work even more difficult, many jobs can
only be done up to a certain wave height. Sometimes you also have to pay
attention to the tides. And then there are remote and climatically
demanding regions like the Arctic or the Antarctic. After all, we know
surprisingly little about what lives in the sea. Researchers assume that
there are a good 1 million higher organisms and 1 billion species of
microbes. The sea is an almost inexhaustible source of natural
substances. However, 95% of them are unexplored, in the deep sea even
99%. Marine tech is of great importance. In this podcast we’ll have a
closer look at it.
The
Offshore Wind Podcast
Welcome to the Offshore Wind Podcast,
hosted by Stewart Mullin and David Lenti! Offshore wind is one of the
world’s fastest growing energy sources, with strong year on year growth
expected across the next few decades. Many nations are banking on
offshore wind to play a major role in reaching their decarbonization and
sustainability targets and helping their economies recover from the
COVID-19 crisis. On the technology front, turbines are bigger and more
powerful than ever, offshore wind farm capacity factors continue to rise
and we are seeing a surge of interest from oil and gas giants seeking to
transition their businesses away from fossil fuels, as well as increased
competition from the developers who have championed offshore wind from
day one.New markets in Asia, the Americas, and eventually Africa,
accelerated growth in Europe, the rise of floating offshore wind and
increasing interest in power-to-x solutions, are creating the basis for
unprecedented growth in the industry. The offshore wind podcast series
looks at the issues facing the offshore wind industry today, and
opportunities for tomorrow.

Black scuba divers across the world are searching
for buried shipwrecks from the transatlantic slave trade, when millions
of enslaved Africans were trafficked to the Americas during the 15th to
the 19th centuries. A new six-part podcast series, Into the Depths,
follows National Geographic Explorer Tara Roberts as she sets off on the
journey of a lifetime to meet the divers, marine archaeologists,
descendants of those brought over on ships, and historians investigating
the lost stories of the slave trade. She’s inspired to share their
accounts both to expand the historical record and to honor the estimated
1.8 million unsung souls who perished during the Middle Passage. Along
the way, Tara meets up with her family and friends, spiritual advisers,
and even a poet to help tell those ancestral stories, and delves into

Investing
for ocean impact
The Earth is in trouble. But the ocean can
help. When it comes to tackling climate change and the biodiversity
crisis, the ocean and the world’s coastlines offer many solutions. Yet
these solutions don’t receive anywhere near enough money to realize
them. And while governments and philanthropists should provide more
funding, they can’t meet the challenge alone. Investments from the
private sector are equally key to success. Entrepreneurs across the
world need support to integrate restoration and conservation into
sustainable businesses. Only then can we create profit, both for people
and for planet. Join Dorothée Herr – manager of the IUCN’s Blue Natural
Capital Financing Facility – to discover the reasons to invest in the
ocean. In Investing For Ocean Impact we’ll talk to leading experts,
global policymakers, and investment movers and shakers. We’ll also dive
into real life, working examples of Nature-based Solutions, from seaweed
farms to marine protected areas, and show how these are projects that
investors can indeed get behind. The time to invest in our ocean is now.

about it. This podcast is for anyone interested in learning more about
the health of our oceans, the key pressures (e.g. marine pollution,
climate change, over-fishing, whaling), and the potential solutions –
and not just for ‘someone else’ to implement, but for the listener too.

Seas
the Day
Seas The Day is a podcast produced at the Duke
University Marine Lab, in Beaufort, North Carolina. Reflecting the
diverse research and educational interests of faculty, students, and
staff, Seas the Day covers a wide range of topics related to marine
science and conservation. We talk about some of the biggest animals in
the oceans and some of the smallest. We talk about management efforts by
local communities and by international agreements. We hear from natural
and social scientists, engineers, and lawyers, artists and authors. So,
yes, we talk about research. But we also talk about the lives of
researchers, staff, and students. And about life on a remote campus and
in a small coastal town.
Seasidecoffee
A weekly 30 minutes podcast highlights life below the seas,
conservation, sustainability, and socio-economic impact. The ocean has a

an insight into the struggles of transferring knowledge
interdisciplinarily or getting important research into meaningful,
impactful legislation. We will talk about ways and means to attract new
talent, funds, and technology, and why it so so essential to explore the
deep sea.

You, me & HIFMB -
Stories of Science and the Sea
Every two weeks, a new guest
takes a seat across from Jan-Claas Dajka and talks to him about current
research projects, curious anecdotes as well as paths, detours and
companions in the (not only) scientific career. Jan is interdisciplinary
postdoc in marine ecology and marine governance at HIFMB. Chatting with
ecologists, geographers, bioacousticians, mathematicians and many more,
he shows the interesting and diverse personalities behind the
transdisciplinary research at HIFMB. The Helmholtz Institute for
Functional Marine Biodiversity (HIFMB) is a research institute located
in Oldenburg. It researches marine biodiversity and its importance for
the function of marine ecosystems. In doing so, it develops the
scientific basis for marine nature conservation and ecosystem
management.
