Ocean Oculus is a communications consultancy for organisations working across ocean research, innovation, policy, and sustainability.
We combine marine science expertise with strategic communication thinking to help research projects, scientific organisations, nonprofits, international initiatives, and marine innovation companies communicate complex work clearly, accurately, and with purpose.
Communications for ocean science, sustainability, and innovation
About Ocean Oculus
Important ocean work does not create change simply because it exists. It must reach the right people in a form they can understand, trust, and use.
Ocean Oculus helps clients develop clear communication strategies and turn complex science, evidence, ideas, and technical information into effective content, digital communications, events, and training.
Founded by marine scientist and communications consultant Dr Sam Andrews, the consultancy brings together subject-matter understanding, editorial experience, and strategic communication expertise.
About Dr Sam Andrews
Dr Sam Andrews is a marine scientist and communications consultant with more than a decade of experience spanning research, journalism, government, nonprofit organisations, and private business.
She holds a PhD in marine science, giving her a practical understanding of scientific research, evidence, uncertainty, and the challenges involved in communicating specialist work. This allows her to work closely with scientists and technical experts, ask informed questions, and maintain accuracy while making complex information accessible.
Before founding Ocean Oculus, Sam worked across research and reporting, communication strategy, public engagement, and science communication training. Today, she supports organisations across the ocean sector to communicate with greater clarity, consistency, and purpose.
Her work is guided by a commitment to accurate, ethical communication and a sustainable and equitable ocean future.
How We Work
Every project begins with understanding your goals, audiences, challenges, and available capacity.
From there, Ocean Oculus develops an approach shaped around what you genuinely need. That may involve communication and content strategy, content development, websites and digital communications, event communications, training workshops, or a combination of services.
We work closely with clients throughout the process because effective communication depends on understanding both the work itself and the people it needs to reach.
What We Stand For
Ocean Oculus is committed to communication that is clear, accurate, inclusive, and ethically responsible.
We aim to support work that contributes to a more sustainable and equitable ocean future. We do not work with organisations or projects that promote fossil fuels, environmental harm, misinformation, or misleading sustainability claims.
Our work supports the wider ambitions of the UN Ocean Decade and the Sustainable Development Goals.
Our wider work: Ocean Opportunities
Ocean Oculus also manages Ocean Opportunities, a platform helping people find the knowledge, networks, and opportunities they need to build careers and contribute to a better ocean future.
Created by Dr Sam Andrews, the platform brings together career resources, opportunities, directories, stories, and insights from across the global ocean community.
