Strategic communications for the ocean
We help scientists, policymakers, innovators, practitioners, and organisations working across ocean science, policy, practice, and innovation communicate complex work with clarity, confidence, and impact.
About Ocean Oculus
Ocean Oculus is an ocean-focused communications studio helping organisations, researchers, NGOs, and project teams share marine science, sustainability, and innovation in ways people can actually understand and use.
The studio was founded by Dr Sam Andrews, a marine scientist and communications consultant with over a decade of experience working across ocean research, science journalism, and policy. Ocean Oculus combines subject-matter understanding with strategic communication thinking to help your work reach the right people.
About the Founder
Dr Sam Andrews is a science communicator and research consultant with over a decade of experience in science, journalism, government, and private business. She works across the ocean landscape to translate complex information into clear, accessible communication and to design strategies that support meaningful engagement.
She holds a PhD in marine science, which grounds her work in evidence-based thinking and a practical understanding of the research environment. Before establishing the agency, she spent more than a decade helping to create evidence-based research and reporting, developing communication strategies, delivering public engagement workshops, and training scientists in effective communication. Her work is shaped by clarity, purpose, and a commitment to supporting a sustainable and equitable ocean future.
How We Work
Every project begins with understanding – your goals, your audiences, and what you actually need. From there, Ocean Oculus builds the strategy and delivers the work, whether that is a communication strategy, content, a training workshop, event communications, or something else entirely.
We work closely with clients throughout, because good communication comes from genuinely understanding the work behind it.
What We Stand For
Ocean Oculus is committed to clarity, accuracy, and ethical practice. Our work is guided by the UN Ocean Decade and the Sustainable Development Goals. We do not work with projects or organisations that promote fossil fuels or environmentally harmful practices.
Beyond the studio: Ocean Opportunities
Created by Dr Samantha Andrews and managed by Ocean Oculus, Ocean Opportunities is a developing community hub designed to help people navigate careers, opportunities, and connections in the ocean space.
