Workshop: The Art of Science Communication

About the workshop

This half-day workshop, developed for the Memorial University Biology Graduate Symposium, introduced graduate researchers to arts-based approaches to science communication, helping them explore how creative methods can deepen engagement and reach audiences who may not usually connect with science.

The challenge

The Biology Graduate Students' Association wanted a session that moved beyond traditional communication formats, showcasing how artistic practices could help researchers connect with public audiences in more meaningful ways.

What we delivered

A hands-on workshop for 25 participants built around creative exploration and experimentation:

  • Sculpting scientific concepts with an artist-scientist

  • Movement and expression as communication tools

  • Group challenges connecting research to creative forms

  • Facilitated reflection and discussion

We also coordinated:

  • Guest speakers and facilitators

  • Custom creative exercises and materials

  • Event logistics: room setup, materials, refreshments

  • Social media promotion

Outcomes

Participants gained new ways of thinking about public engagement and discovered creative tools for communicating their research.

The session expanded researchers' understanding of how arts-based approaches can inspire curiosity and foster emotional connection to science beyond data and facts alone.
