Sea Shorts: A wreck of seabirds

Nature can be harsh. For the seabirds of Jersey (Channel Islands), the winter four years ago was especially harsh.

Storm after storm after storm battered the Island. Seabirds battled through high winds and big waves for find food and shelter. Sadly, sheer exhaustion and starvation meant many of the birds simply drowned.

By the end of March, 1,022 birds had washed up on Jersey's shores. This number of birds in this "seabird wreck" is likely only a small portion of the birds that passed during the storms. Not all of the bodies that washed ashore would have been spotted and recorded, and many more may never have reached the Island.
