Sea Stories: Christmas at Sea

The son of a lighthouse keeper, Scottish-born Robert Louis Stevenson (1850 - 1894) grew up with the sea in his blood. He travelled far on wide as a passenger on many ships that sailed through Europe, across the Atlantic to the United States of America, and across the Pacific towards Samoa. At times those trips were harrowing. Perhaps it was one of those trips that inspired "Christmas at Sea" - a battle of ship and sailor against the harsh winter conditions that Stevenson captures so vividly.

"Christmas at Sea", which appeared in "The Scotts Observer" back in 1988, has been reproduced here under the Public Domain licence.
